There is a "hot spot" in my basement. A small area where the floor and air above it feel red hot. It's so hot you would swear that molten rock is just beneath the cement. Once I left some newspapers and a sponge brush there after staining a wood project and it caught fire. My husband explained that it sometimes happens. I figured the "hot spot" was to blame and moved my hobby a few feet away. Later I decided to give the mysterious spot a name. I called it Devlin. The canvas mask in the photo was made by my son in grade school. He kept it on his bedroom wall directly across from the door. Spooky. Not thinking clearly, I placed it on the hot spot in order to put a face to the name. I was about to take a picture of Devlin when the eyes began to glow. Worried that the mask would go up in flames, I quickly picked it up, but it wasn't hot. It wasn't even warm. So I put it back and took the photo. I really liked the way that mask came out. I like it even better on Devlin. Devlin must like it too, because it's still there unharmed by the intense heat. |

It's early April. In the middle of the night your torn from a warm deep sleep by the warning cry of your carbon monoxide detector. You fly out of bed, scream at your spouse in the pitch black to WAKE UP! You open windows as you listen for the groggy but conscious reply. You run through the house opening doors and windows on your way to the children's bedrooms. The deafening siren screams from all directions at once. The family manages to get outside, out together, out to safety. Everyone draws in a long breath of fresh air. That's when you notice your neighbors standing in their yards, standing in their pajamas and underwear looking cold and outraged. The ringing gets louder, because it's coming from every house on the street, from the next street over, from every street anywhere that has a house on it. It only grows faint as the batteries start to run down. That's when you realize the danger wasn't inside your home. It's not inside your neighbors' homes either. And that long breath of fresh air you took in was laced with odorless poison. You don't know how such a thing could have ever happened. All you do know is that you've only got moments left to say good-bye to your loved ones................time's up. |
