IN THE SHADOW OF ARECIBO

By G. O. Clark

Below the

perforated aluminum umbrella

of the radio telescope, a snail inches

its way through the leaves,

seeking out sustenance -

compliments of our nearest star -

a slow process like that of scanning

the heavens above,

where years are

measured in light, and progress

towards first contact crawls along

at a snail's pace.
