BOOK OF GENESIS

By John Nichols

Christmas time 1968

mankind was leaving

the Earth.  Not cast out

but a perfect romantic

moment of adventure.

A voyage of inspiration

cultural earthquakes

humans on another

world.  We stopped

watching.  Put robots

on Mars.  Took pictures

of Saturn’s beer belly

ring.  Our probes roved out

to the Kuiper Belt. Still we

sat at home tuned into reality

TV.  Yet our garden warmed.

Too late to change we cast

ourselves out to wander

the Arm seeking a cradle

to again call our home.
